Title: Blue Sea Fuse Box Installation
Last Updated: December 31, 2008

Problem:
Where should I pull power from for all my 'farkles' and how should I provide that power.

Solution:
After reviewing many solutions I decided to add a Blue Sea distribution box to provide a central point of power for all my accessories. A major side benefit is that I can easily separate all my wiring from factory BMW wiring in case of concern by BMW (or myself). While the blue sea was expensive, it was worth the money. It is good quality and is easy to work with.

Install:
The Blue Sea box is tucked behind my read seat in the cavity just below the rear storage rack. This allows access to the battery or other areas under the seat easily. I used Velcro to secure the Blue Sea box.I wanted a power source that would be 'hot' while the key was 'On' or in the 'Acc' position. For this, I spliced into the rear BMW powerlet that the factory installed. No need to cut into other BMW wires, plus this powerlet is on a dedicated fuse.

Power Consumption
:
My Blue Sea is draws power from the Powerlet that is rated at 5 amps. The following table shows that all the devices my Blue Sea is supporting is under the 5 amp rating.
Device Standby Mode Maximum Draw Mode
Valentine One 225 mA 425 mA (maximum alarm condition)
Garmin 2820 .39 amps .43 amps
Autocom 2 amps 2 amps

Parts used:

1. Blue Sea Power box. West Marine, Roseville, CA.  Part Number: 3733482
   2. Standard power cable from Radio Shack.

The blue crimp connection is how I connected to the existing BMW Powerlet.
